Lately, I have heard a trendy topic discussing whether or not, people should be “working for free”. To me, there are things to consider if you would want to work for free, either as an intern or volunteer.
Working for free isn’t really free, because the time invested in the experience benefits us later. For example, through volunteering, you will learn about people’s skills, brush up on your public speaking or even develop management knowledge through helping others.
Intention is the key. The main two factors for self inquiry. Ask yourself, “What is my intention for engaging in free work? Is it to gain experience? Is it to give back? Or something else? Does my capacity allow me to engage in free work? Are my survival and financial bases covered?”
From our business perspective, when we do things for free, it could help the society, develop better future generations, or unlock new business networking potential that strengthens relationships.
My simple advice is that if you do work for free, you need to be sure that it translates somehow into useful experience. Sometimes, we work to learn, then to earn later; or to give back what we have.
If you want to know the magic, then you have to be the sorcerer. There is a price that you have to pay to learn it, and that is, your time spent as an intern or volunteer.
